Inventors invent things when they\u2019re needed. Businesses innovate when they have no other choice. \u2026 <em>Or do they?<\/em><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.ted.com\/talks\/steven_johnson_how_play_leads_to_great_inventions\" width=\"800\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>In reality, both invention and innovation have a strong foundation in <em>play<\/em>. <\/strong>Take Google for example: they infamously give employees 20% of their time to work on new ideas \u2013 to play around with passion projects and try different creative endeavors. These projects aren\u2019t based on necessity, they\u2019re based on play. And this strategy works! Some of Google\u2019s best innovations have come from this 20% time, like Google News and even Gmail.<\/p>\n<p>A recent TED Talk by Steven Johnson, science author and media theorist, explores how many of our most transformative ideas \u2013 including computers \u2013 have come out of play. As he says:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cThe playful state of mind is fundamentally exploratory, seeking out new possibilities in the world around us.
