And frankly, neither are engineers.<\/p>\n<p>So I felt\u00a0somewhat\u00a0challenged recently when I was invited to speak to\u00a0students at the\u00a0W Booth School of Engineering at McMaster University, which focuses on\u00a0creating\u00a0not just builders,\u00a0but leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Product-obsessed\u00a0engineers and\u00a0always-racing-somewhere\u00a0entrepreneurs aren\u2019t\u00a0generally known\u00a0for\u00a0having\u00a0the open, engaging\u00a0and\u00a0empowering management style\u00a0that seems so critical in business today.\u00a0Still,\u00a0<strong>entrepreneurs\u00a0thrive on change<\/strong>,\u00a0so\u00a0understanding people \u2013 and helping them grow\u00a0\u2013\u00a0is\u00a0just one more\u00a0skill set\u00a0we\u00a0have to\u00a0adopt.<\/p>\n<p>So I\u00a0thanked\u00a0Professor David Potter for his courage in handing me the microphone in front of\u00a0his classroom of\u00a0emerging minds, and\u00a0tried\u00a0to\u00a0persuade\u00a0them that leadership is much more than just getting\u00a0things done.<\/p>\n<p>In recent\u00a0years, I\u00a0have spent more time\u00a0\u2013\u00a0in my own company and with other\u00a0organizations\u00a0\u2013<strong>helping\u00a0people\u00a0adapt their\u00a0leadership\u00a0approach to\u00a0a world of\u00a0constant, unpredictable\u00a0change.<\/strong>\u00a0And as I explained\u00a0to these engineering\u00a0students,\u00a0addressing\u00a0change\u00a0succeeds or fails by understanding\u00a0a concept you rarely learn in the classroom:\u00a0\u201ccontext.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0Oxford, \u201ccontext\u201d\u00a0is\u00a0a frame of reference \u2013 a device you use to extract meaning from random or imperfect information.\u00a0For\u00a0me,\u00a0\u201ccontext\u201d\u00a0is the most important word in business.\u00a0Leaders\u00a0always\u00a0need to\u00a0understand\u00a0the needs, concerns and\u00a0demands that shape\u00a0their\u00a0actions and attitudes\u00a0\u2013 as well as those\u00a0factors affecting\u00a0the people you do business with.\u00a0<strong>Knowing\u00a0all of these different motivations and frames of reference puts you in a position to find\u00a0common ground\u00a0and move\u00a0ahead\u00a0together.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Context is especially important in managing people. How can you help someone change their behaviour\u00a0if you\u00a0don\u2019t take the time to understand\u00a0why they\u2019ve been\u00a0acting\u00a0\u201cthat way\u201d\u00a0in the first place?<\/p>\n<p>Contextually speaking,\u00a0I\u00a0see\u00a0two\u00a0stages\u00a0that\u00a0entrepreneurs\u00a0generally\u00a0go through\u00a0\u2013\u00a0and the\u00a0quantum leap\u00a0they need to take\u00a0to evolve\u00a0their\u00a0leadership style.\u00a0I offer the following\u00a0framework\u00a0not just for entrepreneurs, but for those\u00a0who work with them.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>The Island Leader:<\/strong>\u00a0Many\u00a0entrepreneurs\u00a0isolate\u00a0themselves\u00a0when making decisions within\u00a0their\u00a0own\u00a0businesses\u00a0\u2013 for\u00a0two fundamental reasons.\n<ul>\n<li>The first is that\u00a0entrepreneurs of my generation\u00a0began\u00a0their\u00a0business\u00a0journeys\u00a0in a top-down age. Our bosses told us:\u00a0\u201cKeep your head down, put one foot in front of the other, shut your mouth. And in\u00a030\u00a0years,\u00a0they\u2019ll give you\u00a0a gold watch.\u201d\u00a0It was an era when business success was created by following,\u00a0not standing out.\u00a0Naturally,\u00a0this\u00a0early learning affects the way\u00a0many\u00a0entrepreneurs\u00a0deal with\u00a0people\u00a0today\u00a0\u2013 especially after fighting so hard to\u00a0establish\u00a0their\u00a0own\u00a0firms.<\/li>\n<li>Secondly,\u00a0who exactly are\u00a0entrepreneurs\u00a0leading when we\u00a0launch\u00a0our companies?\u00a0Usually just a few true believers \u2013 and\u00a0often,\u00a0no one\u00a0at all.\u00a0So\u00a0how can entrepreneurs\u00a0become great leaders\u00a0when we\u00a0so often\u00a0begin as islands\u00a0unto ourselves?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The\u00a0Treehouse\u00a0Leader:<\/strong>\u00a0As our companies\u00a0grow,\u00a0entrepreneurs\u00a0hire other people to work \u201cfor\u201d us.\u00a0Having\u00a0scant\u00a0leadership experience, we\u00a0tend to build our own\u00a0treehouse\u00a0on our business island\u00a0and lob directions\u00a0from above:\u00a0\u201cDo this, do that. No,\u00a0that was yesterday\u00a0\u2013\u00a0do this instead.\u201d\u00a0When you establish your own business, founded on your\u00a0own\u00a0personality and worldview, it\u2019s not\u00a0easy to open up and work more collaboratively. Entrepreneurs\u2019\u00a0thick skin hides a lot of bruises. We have heard all the objections that come\u00a0with\u00a0trying\u00a0to do things\u00a0differently: \u201cThat\u2019s a stupid idea. This\u00a0will\u00a0never work.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>But a business model honed in the 20th\u00a0century doesn\u2019t\u00a0fit\u00a0any more.\u00a0<\/strong>The island and the\u00a0treehouse\u00a0have to go.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Entrepreneurs\u00a0must\u00a0open up and recognize that more\u00a0heads are\u00a0better than\u00a0one.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2548\" src=\"https:\/\/www.innovators.org\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/image-from-rawpixel-id-413941-jpeg-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"Fortunately, entrepreneurs trying to up their game have natural allies: millennials.\" width=\"428\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.innovators.org\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/image-from-rawpixel-id-413941-jpeg-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.innovators.org\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/image-from-rawpixel-id-413941-jpeg-768x487.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.innovators.org\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/image-from-rawpixel-id-413941-jpeg-1024x649.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.innovators.org\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/image-from-rawpixel-id-413941-jpeg-610x387.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.innovators.org\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/image-from-rawpixel-id-413941-jpeg-1080x685.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.innovators.org\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/image-from-rawpixel-id-413941-jpeg.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 428px) 100vw, 428px\" \/>Twenty years\u00a0ago, the business world\u00a0spun more slowly.\u00a0With longer\u00a0product lifecycles, you could build a viable business by coming up with one better idea every few years.\u00a0But <strong>today\u2019s customers demand constant innovation, customization,\u00a0rapid\u00a0prototyping<\/strong>.\u00a0No leader\u00a0can\u00a0do all that alone.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, entrepreneurs trying to\u00a0up their game\u00a0have natural allies:\u00a0millennials.\u00a0I can hear\u00a0your startled\u00a0protests, but I don\u2019t see the new\u00a0generation\u00a0as\u00a0entitled, cynical or smug. I\u00a0associate\u00a0millennials\u00a0with communication\u00a0and\u00a0collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>They have grown up as Gen C, the connected generation. Through technology, they participate in any conversation, on any topic,\u00a0anywhere in the world. They don\u2019t\u00a0accept\u00a0\u201cShut\u00a0up\u00a0and keep your head down.\u201d\u00a0<strong>We leaders must adapt. We must learn\u00a0to converse instead of command.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Respectful conversation is hard \u2013 which is probably why\u00a0our\u00a0bosses avoided it.\u00a0Conversing\u00a0requires mutual respect<strong>.\u00a0If you ask for an opinion,\u00a0you must treat it with care, and\u00a0explain why you\u00a0agree or disagree.<\/strong>\u00a0Offering a shrug \u2013 or no reaction at all \u2013 guarantees that conversation will continue without you.<\/p>\n<p>Did the students get my message? I think they were delighted to be told that their preferred method of communication \u2013 frank, fearless and always on \u2013 will eventually win in the workplace.
