Employee Engagement: “Start from where you are, use what you have and do what you can” – Arthur Ashe (1943-1993)

“Start from where you are, use what you have and do what you can” – Arthur Ashe (1943-1993). How poignant are these simple little words? Everything we do makes a difference in something or someone. We like to think that, when it comes to business innovation, employee engagement plays a crucial role, and when you apply these words to the concept of employee engagement, your current perspective may just be altered.

Start from where you are. Whether you are currently working on changes within your organization, or are thinking that innovation would be useful but are not sure how to go about implementing it, the best way to start is to look at what needs changing. Not sure what that might be? It might be time to go to others for ideas!

Use what you have. This really speaks to the resources we have available to commit to projects. You really don’t need a lot to get the ideas flowing – a white board on your lawn might be a good gathering space for ideas to flow and grow.

Do what you can. Now is the time to start. It doesn’t matter where along the innovation continuum you currently reside, what is critical is that you organize your thoughts and ideas into one cohesive innovation strategy that is true to your own heart as well as the heart (the core) of your business. By re-establishing those core values and aligning them with an innovation strategy that makes the most of the minds of your team, you may actually be surprised at how much can come from that switch. Stop making excuses and start thinking outside the box!
